BREAKING: Clash of champions as Jay Byrne & Craig O’Brien battle for the Irish light-middleweight title…..

Following on from his thrilling stoppage win over ‘Crank’ Whitehouse in December for the Celtic welterweight title, Jay Byrne is looking to prove the doubters wrong yet again. ‘The Negotiator’ will make another step-up in class and weight as we can confirm he will face Celtic champion Craig ‘The Iron’ O’Brien for the Irish light-middleweight title on March 3rd in the National Stadium, on the ‘Last Man Standing’ show.

It’s a fight that has been rumoured for a while now and Jay is glad it’s signed off –

“Yeah there’s been a bit of talk about it for a while now, so I can confirm it’s signed off and im ready to go for March 3rd, fighting for the Irish light-middleweight title. It’s something im really excited about and im really looking forward to already.

“Obviously it’s moving up in weight again, but to be honest il be in and around the weight anyway so il be pretty comfortable at light-middle. Im planning to stick to the training programme I used when I fought Anthony Fowler so I think people will be surprised how big I come in on the night.”

Looking ahead to the fight and Jay acknowledges that ‘The Iron’ will be a tough test but it’s a test he’s relishing –

“On paper, it’s a really good matchup, Craig had a decent win last time out for the Celtic title. He got floored but he showed balls to get up and get the win. He’s undefeated (7-0), but to be honest, records dont mean anything to me, im here to get the win over him and claim that title.

“Craig is a really good fella and a good boxer and Im glad im fighting him for the Irish title but I think with my experience and the level I’ve fought at, that will give me the edge in this one. And to be honest, I think he’ll be in for a shock when I start landing on him, with my size and strength on the night, I think it will really surprise him.”

Jay says that win or lose he’s still in a good position as he has major fights lined up this year –

“Whatever happens in this fight, im still in a good position. Im a natural welter so Im planning to go straight back to welterweight anyway and go for the Irish title over the next few months. I think at this stage in my career I just want major fights. If that means title fights here in Ireland or if anything big comes in to go abroad il look at that too.

“Like I said, I’ve a lot of respect for Craig and im really excited for this fight and I think it’s one the fans will really be buzzing for too. I think it’s a headline fight in its own right and boxing fans are in for a great night with this one.

“I also just want to welcome my new sponsors on board – Nutrition365

As Jay said, this is a headline fight in it’s own right. Matching two tough current champions and two of the most popular fighters on the domestic scene against each other. With the clash of styles there’s no doubt these two will gel to create a fantastic fight on what promises to be another great night for Irish boxing fans with the inaugural ‘Last Man Standing’ taking place.
