Jorge Linares retained his WBA lightweight title in a close affair with Luke Campbell in the Inglewood forum. LA. Britain’s Victor Loughlin scored the fight 115-113 in Campbell’s favour with the other two judges giving the champion victory with scores of 114-113 and 115-112.
Linares started the fight well and dropped Campbell in round 2 with a cracking straight right. Linares then took the next few rounds as he dominated the fight early on. However, Campbell rallied and got himself back into the fight after the halfway point.
Campbell really seemed to get into his stride and it looked like he won rounds 7 to 10 as he upped his work rate. It looked to be all to play for in the final two rounds, but Linares picked his shots a bit better and landed the more eye-catching shots as the fight came to an end.
Linares wasn’t at his explosive best but he done enough and showed his class and experience to edge out Campbell. And for his part, Campbell really proved a lot of doubters wrong with his performance last night, and showed that he belongs with the elite level at lightweight.
