The headline fight of the packed Celtic Clash 3 card saw former amateur star Eric ‘Lilywhite lightning’ Donovan take on Dai Davies for the Celtic featherweight title.
After only 4 fights there was talk that maybe this fight was too soon for the Athy man as he made a big step-up in class to take on the Welsh champion Davies.
However those fears were quickly eased as Donovan picked apart and outclassed Davies.
After a cagey opener with both fighters happy to land single shots, the fight got going in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Donovan was landing the cleaner eye-catching shots as Davies looked to keep a tight guard.
The paid stood and traded blows in the 3rd with Donovan mixing shots well tot the head and body while Davies was looking to land a big right hook to some effect.
This pattern continued in the 4th and 5th and then as they went to round 6 Donovan had probably his best round yet. His movement and footwork was getting the better of Davies and he landed more clear straight lefts on the Welshman. Davies struggled to land anything clean on Donovan who took a clear advantage going into the final two rounds.
Davies sensed he needed to do something to turn the fight around and came ou more aggressive in the 7th but Donovan didn’t look troubled and was happy to pot-shot and out-box his opponent.
In the final round both fighters went toe to toe and stood trading blows. Donovan again had the more eye-catching shots especially those hooks to the body. Davies to his credit fought bravely to the end and kept up with Donovan’s high tempo.
Donovan won clearly on points 80-72 and moves to 5-0 (3 ko’s) while claiming his first pro title.
He answered any critics with that classy performance and looked like he had some extra gears he could have went through. The future is bright for the talented Kildare man who will no doubt have his eyes on more titles sooner rather than later.
