When: Saturday July 29th
Where: Barclays Center Brooklyn
This has the potential to be a fight of the year candidate. We have the pantomime villain Adrien Broner who is a 4 weight champion battling Mikey Garcia who himself is a 3 weight champion. These two have a combined record of 69-2 (54 ko’s)
Garcia is finally back headlining big shows after a layoff due to contract issues. While Broner knows that this is his chance to get back amongst the pound for pound elite following his loss to Shawn Porter in 2015. Since then he has won 3 in a row against mediocre opposition and looked pretty average in his last fight against Granados.
This is a tough one to call, and there’s a few ways the fight could play out. Garcia is a heavy favourite for this fight but I think its going to be closer than people think. Broner’s 2 losses have come at welterweight against Shawn Porter & Marcos Maidana, both tough and rugged pressure fighters. So he’s used to fighting at a higher weight and against big punchers he’s shown that he’s got a great chin.
Garcia’s style isn’t like Porter’s or Maidana’s, so expect him to try out-work Broner with speed and combination’s. However I think Broner may have the edge in hand-speed, so Garcia will really need to time his attack’s well as Broner is an excellent counter-puncher.
Prediction: Broner will look to use his size advantage throughout and keep Garcia at bay with his excellent jab, body shot’s and counter right’s. Expect Garcia to try and force the pace, knowing that Broner can switch off and be out-worked at times as he load’s up on shot’s and is known to take breaks during rounds.
With the power these two carry, It wouldn’t surprise me if they both hit the canvas at some stage. And if Garcia does drop Broner, he will need to use his renowned killer instinct to finish the fight as Broner has shown that he can come from behind and win fight’s late on.
Im expecting a really close, hard-fought, entertaining fight. I think Broner will be really up for this one and I think we will see the best of him against Garcia. However, I think Garcia will nick it on his work rate and sharp, eye-catching shots. Garcia has the potential to be pound for pound number one, and I think this performance will cement his place among the boxing elite.
Result: Garcia wins on points (possibly majority decision)
